As an Alpha Tester, I received the Cairo program about 4 hours ago. Although still in Alpha Stage (with only some of the features implimented), I can assure you that the Cairo Shell is NOT Vaporware, nor is it a Mac ripoff, as another poster suggested. The Private Alpha Testing will continue for 30 days. After a few months (perhaps three, perhaps more) Cairo will go into PUBLIC BETA. Although I cannot divulge much 'behind the scenes' information, any public information/screenshots/discussion is still available for your perusale at the Cairo site. Stick around, the best is yet to come (and yes, there is LOTS more). BTW, it runs quite well under Windows 7 build 7000

Ugh, yet another skinning format

And uh... Neither alpha or beta software can be considered "release" imho... pre-release is more accurate.

And you have to be on their release list...not sure I'd wanna go with an alpha...who knows how it'd be with my WSX and SD software.

Beta's are bleeding edge enough for this old coot.

Litestep is still beta...probably will never be anything other than....and it's as rock-solid as any shell around [including Exploder]....

-sigh-

No news in five months.

Too bad.

on May 14, 2009

But will it play nice? Therein lies the rub.

on May 14, 2009

Looking thru their forums I see several familiar names.........

Still in alpha.......for paying.......sorry "donating" customers

on May 14, 2009

'10 days'.....

....must be them new-fangled metric ones.....

on May 14, 2009

Yeh...cruised over a couple of times....wish it'd come out in a public beta (or RC) format as trialware to see what it could do.

I dunno that the people over at Cairo Shell are any more guilty of release delays than Microsoft, Stardock and other software companies... developers who want to get their product as close to right as possible before releasing it to the general public.

Sure it's frustrating to have to wait, particularly when you're just itching to try it out, but what would you rather have... a half baked app that consistently presents with issues, or a well tested complete app that works well right out of the box?

As I recall, Stardock has yet to release a x64 Vista compliant Object dock... and that's been on the table for a while.  And MS delayed the release of Vista by several months because they felt it wasn't ready.  I'm sure there are other cases as well, but irrespective of projected/estimated release dates/times, it ain't done 'til it's done... amd better to be well done than half baked, eh!!

starkers....they posted a countdown to a release date.  That implies a specific time...somewhen in the past [now].

It wasn't a case of 'later this year'...or 'soon'....
